SALINA — The Bearcat varsity volleyball team competed against the Sacred Heart Knights Sept. 17, on the road, playing two matches and winning both.

The Cats won the opening set 25-20. The second set was similar, with the Cats winning 25-19. There was no need for a third.

The first set of the second match was abysmal for the Knights as they were defeated 25-12.

The second set flipped to the other end of the spectrum. It was the closest set of the day, with the Cats ultimately eking out a 25-22 victory.

“As a group, this team is working hard and working together,” head coach Amy Johnson said. “Getting a sweep against a league school with both JV and varsity is always fun for our volleyball family.

“We have talked a lot about taking that next step at all levels, and the girls seem to want that to happen. Getting these early league wins will help us build momentum as we head into the tougher part of our league schedule. We have set goals, and it’s great to see this group come together working to achieve them!”

Leader for assists was junior Reagan Hansen.

“I thought we worked really hard,” she said. “Our serve receive was very effective and we executed our plays very well. The energy on the court has helped a lot this season, especially with how close our class is. We all want what’s best and are really good about supporting each other, even when one of us is down from a bad play.”

Leader for digs was junior Elyse Haxton with 16.

“I thought it was a really good night,” she said. “We played good team volleyball. If we keep playing together and for each other, I think we have a good chance of doing some good things.”

Leader for kills was junior Alexis Moore with 17. She was also the leader for stuff blocks with 6.

The leader for aces was junior Kelli Rodriguez with 2.

This puts the team’s season record at 9-5.

Their next action will be Sept. 28 at the Lyons Tournament, Lyons.
