Primary ballot due May 2

May 2 is the receipt deadline for mail-in ballots in the Kansas democratic presidential primary.

With the 2020 Kansas primary, the state party has made the most significant changes in decades to Kansas’ Democratic presidential nominating process.

Party organizers said the goals of these changes are to encourage greater participation, provide wider accessibility for voters, and be conducted in an open and transparent manner.

Voters will rank their top five candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination. If a candidate receives fewer than a minimum 15 percent of all first-choice votes, that candidate’s votes will be reallocated to the next preferred viable candidate until all candidates remaining receive at least 15 percent.

Because the state is conducting the primary in May — in full compliance with the Democratic National Committee — Kansas has been awarded a 20 percent bonus in delegates for a total of 45 delegates instead of the original 39. The delegates will be assigned to candidates based on the primary results, which will be released as soon as they are available.
