Central Plains approves learning plan

HOLYROOD — Central Plains USD 112 board members approved a continuous learning plan April 2 at a special meeting that was available to patrons on the district website.

The plan — the result of the Gov. Laura Kelly closing the state’s school buildings for the remainder of the 2019- 20 year — now goes to the Kansas Department of Education for approval.

Superintendent Greg Clark said elementary teachers are using work packets and educational computer programs already familiar to students as they communicate with parents and students via e-mail, text, telephone calls and Zoom, an internet communication program.

Secondary teachers will conduct learning activities through the Google Classroom platform. Teachers are conducting Zoom meetings with students and taping themselves teaching classes, so students will be more comfortable with the delivery system.

Teachers are required to check in with each of their students at least once a week.

“The majority of our teachers are planning to contact their students and parents at least three days per week,” Clark said. “All teachers will have office hours where they will be available for students to contact them for assistance.”

Counselors and social workers also are reaching out to students and parents.

Clark said the district’s technology department has been working with local internet providers to insure all technology is working as it should.

“On our district website, we will have a special area for COVID 19 and school district information with our technology personnel listed, and to contact them if they are having trouble with their technology,” he said.

Clark said USD 112 is working closely with its special education provider, the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education (CKCIE), to ensure students with individual education plans get the required instruction.

As of today, the district’s graduation ceremonies are postponed. Wilson was originally scheduled for May 9 and Central Plains graduation was set a day later, May 10.

“We have had discussions with the principals, parents and school board on holding a graduation ceremony later in the summer if allowed,” Clark said.

In other business:

• A resolution suspending Board Policy IHF, regarding graduation requirements for the 2019-20 school year was approved. The students must meet all standards set out in K.A.R. 91-31-35, unless otherwise modified by the state board of education or state department of education to qualify for graduation in May 2020.

The district will apply to the state to waive attendance requirements for the school year. USD 112 was open 925.18 hours during this year. It will ask that 190.82 hours be waived from the 1,116 required hours for the 2019-20 school year.
