Christmas comes to the art gallery

The North American tradition that started in 1781 is on display at the Ellsworth Area Arts Council. The Christmas tree as we all know comes in many sizes, shapes, colors, and varieties. That is what you will find walking in a winter wonderland as you enter the art museum.

Dixie Jones started the Christmas tree display about 12 years ago. Area businesses, organizations, and individuals set up their trees on display at the art museum. The trees will be on display for about six weeks before being replaced by a new exhibit.

“The Ellsworth County Area Arts Council is a charitable and educational organization,” said Robert Rogers, a volunteer at the gallery.

Visitors average about 20 a day.

“People from all over the world have stopped in to admire all the pieces on display. There have been people from Japan, Australia, and even parts of Europe.”

The art gallery is open from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s funded by donations and the City of Ellsworth, Rogers said

This year’s winter wonderland theme is Starry Night. There are about 20 trees on display with a variety of decorations such as a recycled bicycle parts tree and reindeer by the Ellsworth Correctional Facility. A few trees, including one from Mugs Kepka of Ellsworth’s Downtown Bohemian Bakery, have handmade ornaments and decorations by the youth in the area from day cares, 4-H, and the 3rd graders from Ellsworth Elementary School.

Rogers, who is also an artist, displays his work occasionally.

“It is not just an art museum,” he said.“There is a grief support group who meets once a week, local musicians have had jam sessions, Cowtown Carvers have had wood carving displays and other organizations will use our space for various events and activities.”
