Claflin City Council addresses issues

By

The Claflin City Council met Nov. 12 at the city building. Business included:

• John Herter questioned why he is being billed for water at his shop. He had a deal with a former mayor that if he allowed the city to put a gas line across his property for the sewer plant, he could hook onto city water and only be billed if there was any water used. After discussion, Suelter will contact Kansas Gas Service about this gas line.

• There’s an ongoing investigation into the cars that were keyed several months ago.

• The city has 2020 stickers for the ATV tags.

• Department head Richard Hayes reported the city is waiting for the building to be brought in for the filtration system.

He plans to start repairs on the boiler at the Rec Center tomorrow.

The city is not required to do all the infrastructural work as the annexation was voluntary.

• Department head Gary Vaughan said the sidewalk at 300 E Williamson has been fixed.

Repairs are being made to 521 3rd Street.

• The National Scenic Byway was established 15 years ago and signage is showing wear and needs replaced. The county has a small fund to pay for the website but there is no other income stream. Curtis Wolf, on behalf of the byway committee, is asking the corridor towns for funding for this project. The committee would also like to have a Claflin representative. Hoisington and Ellinwood have each contributed $500 toward the project. Great Bend contributes the advertising. Michaelis moved to give $500 out of the general fund to the project. D. Hubbard seconded with all in favor.

• Sewer plant replacement. Alan Luttrell is sending in a preliminary report to KDHE to see if we can get help with the loan for the sewer plant replacement.

• The All School Reunion will be May 23-24. Included in the festivities will be street dances, beer garden, kids’ events at the park, touch a truck and a car show. More information in the coming months.
