The Ellsworth VFW Auxiliary met Aug. 15 at the VFW Post with nine members. Gloria Perez presided.

After the opening ceremony, Joyce Weeden was installed as trustee.

Secretary Kathryn Foran read four thank you notes, some of which were written by families of deceased members, for memorial money sent to the VFW National Children’s Home in Easton Rapids, Mich. Kansas has a house for family members who have a parent who is deployed. Chaplain Connie Ranker also gave a prayer for the National Children’s Home.

Discussions were held on the following:

• If the members would be interested in helping with next year’s Cowtown Days.

• Concerning the VFW Auxiliary grave markers for families to purchase for their deceased member’s plots.

• A committee was appointed to research the viability of a Purple Heart Monument in Ellsworth. The committee to explore the possibilities will consist of Peggy Weinhold, Connie Rodriguez and Joyce Weeden.

• Community calendars with birthdays and anniversaries will be for sale soon.

• The Department of Kansas meeting was held in Hays Aug. 11-13. The District 4 meeting was held Aug. 19 in Manhattan.

• Bingo is being held every third Sunday at 2 p.m. at the VFW Post Home, 1006 W. 12th St., Ellsworth.

Peggy Weinhold reported on the following dates: Aug. 26 Women’s Equality Day; Sept. 2 V-J Day: Japan Signed Formal Surrender 1945; Sept. 5 Labor Day; Sept. 10 U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps 1962; Sept. 11 Patriot Day; Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance Day; Sept. 14 Ladies Auxiliary VFW Organized 1914; Sept. 14 The Star Spangled Banner written by Francis Scott Key in 1814; Sept. 16 POW/MIA Recognition Day; Sept. 17 U.S. Constitution Approved 1787; Sept. 17 Constitution and Citizenship Day; Sept. 18 U.S. Air Force Established 1947; Sept. 25 Gold Star Mother’s Day Sept. 29 VFW Day Established 1899.

The meeting closed with prayer. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Post Home.
