Council urged to slow speeders

WILSON — A Wilson resident voiced concerns about speeding cars at Monday’s meeting of the Wilson City Council.

Mark Hill said he gets riled up at the speeding cars which are constantly going by his residence in the south part of Wilson. The speed limit there is 20 miles per hour.

“They (motorists) are just not aware of it (the speed limit),” he said.

Hill said in the past, the extreme ticket written on that stretch of road involved a driver going 70 mph instead of the 20 mph speed limit.

Hill said he has talked to Chief Joshua Tipton of the Wilson Police Department about the situation.

Tipton said there have been some citations issued, but not everyone gets a citation. He noted there were at least six traffic stops made last month.

Tipton noted that he and his part-time officer, Jonathan Lawrence, have both sat and taken traffic speed there, but when they are there, people generally obey the speed limit.

“I totally understand where you are coming from,” Mayor Mike Peschka told Hill. “I appreciate the fact that you are bringing this to us.”

Council member Chuck Crawford said he would check with the county to see if they have any speed reduction measures that could be put in place.

Peschka asked Tipton to come up with a plan to present to the council for consideration.

In other business:

• Peschka said Joiner Construction of Ellinwood still plans on building moderate income duplex in Wilson, however no land has been purchased yet. The plan is to start this summer and be done by the end of the year. He noted the rising cost of lumber might be a factor in the construction effort. Peschka said the City of Lucas has ended a plan for Joiner to construct similar housing in Lucas.

• The 2020 city audit was approved as presented by Kelli Johnson of Gudenkauf and Malone of Russell.

• A public forum to discuss the abandoned building ordinance No. 854 will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, at city hall.

• A resolution was approved to have the social garden at the 2021 Wilson After Harvest Czech Festival.

• Approval was given to pay $120 for a load of shale rock to be placed on the ballfield at Jellison Park.

• A draft proposal to send out to those interested in building a new website for the city was discussed.

• A motion to spend $54,000 to crack seal streets in the northeast part of town was approved.

• The council approved clearing the following properties from the board of health violations list: 2209 Ave. F, 709 27th Street, 516 23rd Street, 607 29th Street. An extension was granted for 2411 Ave. E and 2303 Ave. B. The council approved a motion not to allow the owner of the property at 919 23rd Street to use an old school bus on that property as a storage container.
