County approves funds for field

By

Ashort agenda meant a short meeting Monday for the Ellsworth County commissioners.

Approval was given to a motion to take $15,990 out of the parks and recreation fund and give those funds to the City of Ellsworth to remove the material on top of the two baseball fields and replace it with new material.

Ellsworth Recreation Director Ron Tenbrink is working to improve the fields. The total cost to replace the dirt is about $64,000.

Tenbrink raised some private funds, and the City of Ellsworth also contributed money toward the project. The eventual goal is to procure matching grant funding to help pay for outfield irrigation, Tenbrink said previously.

In other business:

• A request by Sue Arensman, county register of deeds, to use the bathroom next to her office as storage for school records was given consensus approval.

Arensman said she is out of space and those records must be kept according to state statute.

Shelly Vopat, county clerk, said approval must first be received from the Kansas State Historical Society. Vopat will contact the historical society as well as City Plumbing to remove fixtures in the restroom.

• Commissioners were receptive to a request to donate older tables and chairs now in storage to the City of Ellsworth for use at the Ellsworth Health and Recreation Center. Vopat said she will need to check on a few more details and report back to the commissioners before a formal motion is approved.

The next meeting of the Ellsworth County commissioners is at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the county courthouse.
