County employee wage increases discussed

At Monday’s meeting of the Ellsworth County commissioners, the subject of wage increases for county employees in 2024 was broached during a meeting with department heads.

County Attorney Paul J. Kasper said the commissioners will have their work cut out for them in making a decision.

“I don’t have a good suggestion for you,” he said.

Kasper said commissioners can do one of two things: They can go with a set amount raise or they can go with a percentage raise.

“It may come down to a departmentby- department thing,” Kasper said.

Commission President Greg Bender said he and the other commissioners have not talked about that yet.

“I think things are liable to get a little tight,” he said.

Sheriff Murray Marston said he’d like to know what the commissioners plan to do so he can plug that into his budget request.

Bender said they would start considering the matter.

In other business:

• Theresa Shute, supervisor of the county recycling program, said there haven’t been as many people dropping off recycling at the recycling center as she thought there might be after it was opened back up to the public.

“We’re steady,” she said. “Let’s hope it can keep going,” Bender said.

• County Treasurere Geneva Schneider said the tax search function is up and running for patrons on the county website under county treasurer.

• Approval was given to a $135 per track quote from Security First Title (with a total of 31 tracks currently) to do the initial tax research for the county’s tax sale on property planned for this fall.

The next meeting of the Ellsworth County commission will be at 9 a.m. Monday, April 24, at the county courthouse.
