Fatal crash at highway intersection

A70-year-old Colorado man died and a 39-year-old Kansas man was possibly injured March 22 in a two-vehicle accident at the junction of K-140 and K-156 Highways in Ellsworth.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, at 9:32 a.m. Donald J. Svita, 70, Pueblo, Colo., was driving east on I-140 Highway in a 2004 Toyota Highlander. At the same time, Luke W. Johnson, 39, Randolph, was driving south on K-156 Highway in a 2006 Peterbuilt semitractor- trailer. Svita failed to stop at the stop sign and was hit by Johnson.

Svita was transported to Ellsworth County Medical Center but received fatal injuries in the accident. Johnson was also transported to ECMC with a possible injury. No information on his condition was available.

Neither Svita nor Johnson were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
