Mrs. D.L. Showman presented us with some very fine plum butter last week for which he has our thanks.

Four hundred and thirty is the number of bushels of wheat that D.B. Long received from 18 acres raised on his farm this season.

The mills are running night and day. But if we didn’t notice the fact for nothing, no one would know there was a mill in the city.

September 24, 1891

A largely signed petition was round this week for a third Justice of the Peace in this district. Since Kanopolis has put in claim for one, Ellsworth needs two more they think.

A fine rain Saturday morning.

Mr. Abe Rodgers got home from Eureka Springs this week.

We learn A.N. McLennan has sold his outfit of steers to Gord Freeman who becomes shipper on to the Kansas City market.

Will Sherriff sold his herd of cattle to Green & Allen for $250. We wonder if he got the money before he went to Kansas City.

Mr. Mills, from the Ben’s ranch farm on Elkhorn, has been delivering wagon loads of fruits and vegetables this month.

The young dudes are talking about organizing a band. We wish them success.

Ivens, the stone cutter, is home from the far west and seems to be well satisfied with Kansas.

At the State Fair last week, the Topeka’s Capital gives numerous notices of Ellsworth county men, poultry and other exhibits.

September 28, 1916

W.H. Holt, cashier of the Central National Bank, purchased a Super-six Hudson car last week from C.C. Smith of the Golden Belt Garage. It is a beauty and one of the finest cars in the county.

A horse and buggy belonging to Richmond Eagleton, a young farmer of Ash Creek township, were stolen from the fair grounds last Thursday night. So far the property has not been recovered.

A quiet wedding took place today at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Remley, when their daughter, Nellie Matlida, became the wife of William Freeman Alden.

Miss Emma Branda and Mr. Fred Skalicky of the west end of the county were married at the courthouse Tuesday, September 26, by Judge A. Sidney Chase.

Miss Alice Novak of Russell county and Wilbur Ernest Diven of this county were married at the courthouse, Thursday, September 21, by Judge A. Sidney Chase.

Henry Warta visited high school last week.

September 25, 1941

The Crystal salt mine at Kanopolis, owned and operated by the Denver Crystal Salt company since 1906, changed hands Monday morning when the operating assets were purchased by the Morton Salt company of Chicago, Ill.

All the pomp and ceremony of the Catholic church in administering the rites of confirmation will be used at St. Bernard’s Catholic church in this city next Sunday afternoon when the Rev. Frank Thill, bishop of the diocese of Concordia, will confer that sacrament on a class of 71.

Miss Doris Rae Bradshaw will leave the latter part of this week for Kansas City, Mo., where she will enroll as a junior in the Kansas City Art Institute.

The marriage of Miss Dorothy Schneider, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schneider of Ellsworth, to Mr. John Neuschafer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Neuschafer of Kipp, was solemnized Sunday afternoon at the Immanuel Lutheran church.

The American Legion will sponsor the opening dance for the fall season at the city hall Saturday evening. October 4, with Freddie Welch and his ten piece orchestra.

September 29, 1966

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Rathbun left September 24 for Tehran, Iran, to spend two years in the Peace Corps teaching English at the university and secondary level. Ted is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Rathbun of Lorraine and Mrs. Babbett Rathbun is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tharald Cowley of Downs.

Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Salyers of Ellsworth announce the engagement of their daughter, Nina Nadene to Warren James Drennen, son of Mrs. Lillian Drennen of Kanopolis and Warren Drennen of Salina.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rodriguez Jr. of Ellsworth are the parents of a baby girl born September 28, 1966.

Don Snyder, Ellsworth Scoutmaster, was presented a plaque by the Boy Scout troop committee for many years of service.

September 24, 1981

Janell Scritchfield, Ellsworth, and Jennifer Campbell, Geneseo, were crowned Kansas Shorthorn Princesses at the Kansas State Fair.

Debbie Stonebraker, Ellsworth, was selected as a member of the 1981-82 Bethany Choir.

Nick Slechta was promoted recently to lieutenant colonel in the Kansas Army National Guard,

A daughter, Paula Rachelle, was born Monday, September 21, 1981 to Mr. and Mrs. Don Svaty, Ellsworth. She weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces, and has two brothers, Seth and Joshua. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Svaty and Rev. and Mrs. Don Ray and Nellie Sawhill, Wichita, is a great-grandmother.

The Ellsworth Bearcats offense, which sputtered through the first three quarters of Friday night’s game with Minneapolis, finally hit of every cylinder in the fourth quarter as the Bearcats posted a 27-0 NCAA win against the outmanned Lions.

Mr. and Mrs. John Neuschafer will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with a dance at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, September 26, at the Holyrood American Legion Hall.

September 25, 1986

The public is invited to attend ground-breaking ceremonies Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the site of the Ellsworth Correctional Work Facility, according to Dane Britton, chairman of the Ellsworth Public Building Commission.

Moral issues and scientific technology came together Sunday afternoon in Wilson as more than 100 farmers and parishioners gathered at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church to discuss the future of the family farm.

After a morning Mass, celebrated by Bishop George K. Fitzsimons, the group listened to Charles Ryan, rural life director for the Des Moines Diocese, discuss the church’s function in farming.

The Ellsworth City Police Department reminds all bicycle riders to obey the same rules as anyone driving a vehicle on the streets of Ellsworth.

Ernest and Louise Fulton, Ellsworth, announce the engagement of their daughter, Lori Beth, to Russell L. Higgins, Wichita. He is the son of Marietta Higgins, Lyons.
