November 17, 1881

Mrs. John Tyler, wife of the Methodist minister at Sylvan Grove, Lincoln county, a few days ago, gave birth to four female children — all were born alive. Three of them and the mother died a few days afterward.

A large number of the ladies of our city will “keep open house” on New Year’s day. Call and see our cards for 1892, and leave your orders.

The “Reporter” will keep open house on Christmas and New Year days — for advertisers — new subscribers — and WIDE OPEN for those who are in arrears and desire to pay up, and for a year in advance.

Fred Gordineer has returned from his Illinois visit perfectly satisfied with his home in Ellsworth county and Kansas generally.

Miss Allie Morse, of the Wilson schools, was in the city over Sunday visiting her many friends. ...

November 16, 1916

Joe Kucera is building a barn on his place three miles east of town.

Wheat $1.82, best Colorado coal $7.25 per ton. W.C. Groth, Frantz, Kansas.

Saturday only. Cranberries at 9 cents a quart. John Pressney, cash grocer.

Harfy Rice went to Kansas City Sunday with a view of buying some milk cows.

Karl Stevens, who came here from Salina to take the position of cashier of the Farmers Union store, severed his connection with them last week and is now employed in the Fowler store as clerk. His place was taken by Miss Mary Schneider.

Someone shot and killed a horse belonging to Harry Rice last Friday on his place east of town. Harry has been very accommodating in allowing hunting on his place, but since this accident he has decided to forbid hunting or trespassing in any way on his farm. Just how anyone should be so careless as to shoot and kill a horse is hard to understand, and whoever did it should be man enough to go to Harry and make the loss good.

Married —Miss Ida Pflughoeft and August Lange were married at St. Paul’s German Lutheran church northwest of Ellsworth on Wednesday, November 15, 1916, Rev. A. Schmid, pastor, performing the ceremony.

November 13, 1941

The Ellsworth Bearcats invaded Beloit Wednesday evening of last week when they defeated the strong Trojan team 19-0 before a parents night crowd, Shanelec, Holochek, and Smith scored for the Bearcats.

Mr. George Jelinek is teaching a course in chemistry at the Ellsworth Hospital on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from four to five o’clock. Besides the nurses at the hospital there are three high school seniors, Marilynne Mayer, Marilynn Miller and Betty Johnson, enrolled in the course.

With this issue the Reporter completes seventy years of service in Ellsworth and enters upon its seventy-first year. The Reporter was established in December, 1871. No other firm in Ellsworth county, nor the western half of Kansas has been in continuous business for so great a period.

The football forces of the Ellsworth high school and the Lyons high school took the field at Lyons Tuesday in their annual Armistice Day classic, and the Ellsworth Bearcats soundly trounced their opponents for the seventh straight victory of the season by a score of 21 to 0. ...

Kansas Commander Board, Inc., new changeable letter sign board company in Ellsworth, has gone into limited production and will deliver its first signs this week, General manager Richard Daniels announced.

Gilbert Toman, Holyrood, Sixth District Vice Commander and Melvin Armbrust, Commander of Ellsworth Post 174 presented a flag Veterans Day to Ellsworth High School to be flown at the school athletic events.

A son was born Friday, Nov. 11, to Dr. and Mrs. Grant Derrill Gwinner, Ft. Benning, Ga. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Grant Gwinner, Holyrood; maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Gray, Ellsworth. ...

A steer owned by Donald J. Soukup, Ellsworth, was killed when stuck by an auto on K-14, about seven miles south of Ellsworth.

Joe Pruitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Pruitt, Ellsworth, is a tenor saxophone player for Cloud County Community College’s Instrumental ensemble Jazz ‘82.

Dr. and Mrs. Frank Dlabal, Wilson, were honored guests of their children at a family dinner in observance of their 45th wedding anniversary.

Pamela K. Auten and David D. Weeks, both of Ellsworth, announce their engagement. They have chosen May 29, 1982 as their wedding date.

Seven Quivira Heights High School students participated in an audition for the Kansas Music Educators Association District VI Choir on Saturday, November 7 at Wichita North High School.

Quivira Heights High School students who participated were sopranos — Feigenspan; altos — Becky Bell, Sabrina Hurley and Sheila Magee; basses — Paul Craig and Perry White. Quivira Heights music director is Elaine Brinson.

State Rep. LeRoy Fry, who spent the final 18 days of his campaign recovering in a Wichita hospital from a heart attack, has returned to his rural home in Little River and is looking forward to the 1987 Legislative Session.

The Ellsworth Lady Bearcats traveled to Hesston Saturday with hopes of defending their Class 3-A state volleyball championship, but returned home with just one win as they failed to make it out of their pool.

Kellie Thiessen, daughter of Wheeler and the late Lee Cornwell, finished fourth in her weight division at the Kansas State Bodybuilding Championships in Wichita Sept. 27.

Two Sterling College Lady Warrior tennis players were selected to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference all-conference team, as released by head coach Lonnie Kruse. Jan Carlson, a senior from Ellsworth, was named to the first team. ...
