November 24, 1881
L.H. Westerman is building a splendid farm house. The Flander Brothers are the contractors. When completed a grand hop may be expected.
J.J. Clark has his billiard hall beautifully decorated today. Just call and see it, and you will be surprised to see the magnificent manner in which he displayed his artistic talent. He will keep open doors throughout the day.
A.N. Sypher is city marshal. Remember the fair at Larkin’s Hall, December 30.
Dan Thomas has been appointed under-sheriff by Sheriff Stebbins.
Will Sheriff, N.R. Maclean and others returned from their hunt last week with 28 geese and other smaller game.
Hon. Simon Motz and bride passed through this city on Friday morning last. They were going east on a bridal tour.

November 26, 1891
Good wheat sold on the streets for 49 cents and rye 66 cents a bushel this week.
Good thoroughbred Irish potatoes were selling from the farmers wagons this week at 50 cents a bushel.
Mr. James Ralston of Bull Foot has moved to Ellsworth and took a house in Boggs addition south of the river.
S.T. Johnson, of Trivoli, made us a pleasant call and gave us quite a lift financially, Tuesday.
Robert McIntire, from Langley, was in the city yesterday and bought a new wagon of J. Bebee.
The Getty & Larkin Mill have their two new boilers in place and are now running to their full capacity.
The Ellsworth shooting gallery has gone into winter quarters in the basement of the Opera house under Pattersons harness shop.
Miss Mable Hepperly is very handy with the needle. Specimens of her work may be seen in the showcase in her father’s book store.

High school notes — New records for the Victrola will soon be purchased.
Selections were played on the Victrola Monday morning.
The junior manual training class will soon complete the scenery for the class play.
Frank Shanelec left the hospital last Friday, where he had been confined for five or six weeks with typhoid fever, for his home west of town.
Twin girls were born Tuesday, November 21, to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Klema of Ash Creek.
Last week a part of Ellsworth people made a visit to the sheep ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Campbell east of town. A very pleasant afternoon was spent in learning something of a comparatively new industry in this section, or perhaps one might say, the revival of an old industry, as at one time sheep raising was quite general in this county.
A stack of corn fodder with the corn on the stalks caught fire last Saturday morning on the Wm. Hemreck farm south of town and burned up. The cause of the fire is not known. The damage amounted to about $40.

For the third — and last — time, Kansas will have to work through the double Thanksgiving Day dilemma again this year.
Officially the state is sticking by the old last Thursday of the month Thanksgiving, which is November 27, while President Roosevelt has proclaimed November 20 the national holiday. Next year the national holiday is to be moved back to the old date.
Four marriages were announced at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson during mass last Sunday morning for the remainder of November. Tuesday morning, November 18, the marriage of Miss Mary Kratky, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kratky, and Mr. Edward Soukup, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Soukup, of Ellsworth, was solemnized. Wednesday morning, November 19, Miss Margaret Hrabik, and Mr. Henry Charvat, son of Mrs. Mary Charvat, were married.
Next Tuesday, November 26, the wedding of Miss Anna Hlaus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hlaus, and Mrs. Carl Staudinger will be solemnized; and on Wednesday morning, November 26, the nuptials of Miss Eva Lilak, daughter of Mrs. John Lilak, and Mr. Adolph Homolka will be performed by the rector, Father John McManus.

Three lettermen are included on the 18-man basketball squad at Ellsworth high school, according to Ray Fox, head coach. William Stewart is the assistant coach and Eldon Friesen is the freshman coach.
Lettermen on the squad include Harold Welk, at center and Steve Spratt, who played guard last year. The other letterman is Mark Zouzas.
Paul Grauer, Wilson, and amateur radio operator, has announced he will send messages overseas to servicemen at no charge to the sender.
The marriage of Nina Nadine Salyers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Salyers, Ellsworth, and Lance Corp. W. James Drennen II, son of Mrs. Lillian Drennen, Kanopolis and Warren J. Drennen, Salina, was solemnized at St. Michael’s Chapel, MCAS, Cherry Point, N.C.
Ellsworth Junior High cheerleaders were elected Friday by the students, Robert Shields, Principal reports. Chosen were three eighth graders and two seventh graders, Head cheerleader, Janet Paull, Cynthia Wilcox, Sue Shanelec, Roxie Wallert and Kimberly Calnan.

Employees at Cashco Inc., Ellsworth, got an unexpected half day off last Wednesday, November 11, after the company received a bomb threat.
Ellsworth County sheriff’s officers, policemen and Cashco personnel searched the plant and its offices but could not find a bomb.
A near-tragedy marked the beginning of the 1981 pheasant hunting season in Ellsworth county. Kenny Schepmann, Holyrood, was hit in the right arm and upper chest area Saturday morning, November 14, by pellets from a shotgun blast that was aimed at a pheasant. Schepmann was treated Saturday and released Monday morning from the Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend.
Karen A. Mackey and Gerald L. Munoz were married October 18, 1981, at the home of the groom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Munoz, in Kanopolis.

Holm Motor Co., Inc. of Ellsworth was the successful bidder for a 1987 11-passenger van at Monday night’s meeting of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis USD 327 Board of Education.
Earlier reports that a Sunday morning fire in Wilson was caused by arson are unsubstantiated, according to fire chief Frances Olds, and the fire is still under investigation. Olds said that was no proof that arson was the cause of a blaze that destroyed several tons of old newspapers and magazines which were being stored by a Wilson organization for a paper drive. A charred door was the only damage the building sustained, Olds said.
Two members of Ellsworth state qualifying volleyball team were named to the North Central Activities Association’s all-league team, while two others also received mention.
Krista S. Katzenmeier, Wichita, and Brett L. Hanson, Kanopolis, were united in marriage Saturday, October 25, 1986 at 4 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, Rev. Gary Bender officiated at the double-ring ceremony.
Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Amos Katzenmeier and Mr. and Mrs. Don Hanson, all of Ellsworth.
Marcy Gaston presented her piano students in a fall recital Sunday afternoon, November 16, at the Ellsworth Methodist church.
