Florian added as deputy coroner

The need for more coroners in Ellsworth County was a main topic of discussion at Monday’s county commission meeting.

EMS Director Nathan Florian said there are several deputy coroners — Dr. Jerzy Slomoka, Dr. Ronald Whitmer and Dr. Easton Casey. Shawn McGowan serves as a special deputy coroner.

After talking with McGowan, Florian said since he has a medical background, his name will be added to the special deputy coroner’s list to help fill the gap, especially for the investigation of unattended deaths. Florian will become one of the on-call rotation and he will work closely with McGowan.

The commissioners signed letters of recommendation for Florian.

In other business:

• No action was taken after a 10 minute executive session with Florian to discuss non-elected personnel (employee employment status).

• Connie Terry of the El-Kan Western Rodeo said the county-owned concession stand at the 4-H barn needs considerable repairs because of age and termite infestation.

“We’ll have to look into this and see what we can come up with,” Commissioner Greg Bender said.

• Robert Czyszczon of the Missile Silo Ranch on Ave. I near Carneiro said a grand opening will be conducted at the ranch Oct. 7-8. He asked the commissioners to look into maintaining Ave I so people can visit the ranch, or at least send the message to the township to tell them what is going on. Czyszczon plans to make the missile silo into a high end Airbnb.

Czyszczon said he also owns the former Ellsworth Antique Mall and Pretty Boy Floyd’s. He plans to develop the upper floor of the mall into an event center, with part of the main floor to be used for office rental space. He is seeking the right person to re-open the former Pretty Boy Floyd’s as a restaurant.

The next meeting of the Ellsworth County commission will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at the county courthouse.
