Historical society plans annual event

Ellsworth County’s Josh Svaty will be the speaker at Sunday’s 2 p.m. annual meeting of the Ellsworth County Historical Society at the Senior Center.

Svaty will talk about the “Petroglyphs of the Kansas Smoky Hills,” a 224-page book he co-authored with Rex Buchanan, who is originally from Little River, and Burke Griggs, a Topeka attorney.

Petroglyphs are carvings left in the soft orange and red sandstone of the Smoky Hills through Ellsworth County and other areas of Central Kansas. Most are on private property and rarely seen.

The book contains photographs of 14 sites to highlight individual carvings but also the groups and settings in which they occur.
