Council agrees to contribute to splash pad repairs
HOLYROOD — Members of the Holyrood City Council agreed Monday night to contribute up to $3,500 to repair and seal the blue floor surface on the city’s new splash pad.
Mayor Brandon Koch said the cover has worn down to the concrete in a couple of places. The yellow and green surfaces of the pad have a few rough spots, but repairing the entire floor of the water feature would double the cost.
Repair of the blue cover is $7,190. The local recreation committee has agreed to contribute the $4,300 it has in reserve to the project with the city picking up the remainder of the cost.
The decision came at the council’s regular meeting, which followed an hour-long session to review the “First Impressions” of a group from Cawker City, who visited Holyrood in October. Two of the main things the visitors pointed to as positives were the splash pad and the city park.
“We’ve got the splash pad; we need to keep it up,” council member Sharon Smith said.
Koch said he hopes the repair work will be done in time for Holyrood’s May 30 Jubilee celebration.
In other business:
• Representatives from two companies, EMC Insurance and Conrade Insurance Group, presented proposals for the 2020-21 year. Koch suggested officials study the proposals and be prepared to vote March 16 at the next council meeting.
• Council member Allison Koch asked other officials to sign a letter of support to the Dane G. Hansen Foundation for a grant to help rebuild Holyrood’s American Legion building. The building was razed after a storm damaged it beyond repair. Several residents are currently conducting a fund drive. The building served as a community center of sorts. Senior citizens used it for noon meals and as a place to walk. Other groups used it for gatherings. And over the years it had been the scene of dozens of polka dances that attracted visitors from many miles away.
• Allison Koch also suggested the council conduct a meeting to determine a focus in the wake of the “First Impressions” presentation. The mayor agreed; however, he said the entire council needs to be present. Two members were unable to attend Monday’s meeting.
• The council also approved the use of the fire station for a fundraiser for the local Booster Club.
