J.H. Robbins ‘news from cover to cover’
March is here and we have almost blown through it. Hard to believe we are in the middle of spring break. But I’m ready for the beautiful outdoor weather, are you?
Think about it ... Lying in a hammock reading a good book clouds floating lazily by. Doesn’t that sound like heaven?
Well if it does, we have plenty of books to pick from and if you are not sure what to read we have a “Ten to Try” list up for the month of March.
What is that? Just what it sounds like.
We put out 10 books on a cart that are there for you to try. If you have a book that you read that was just the best book ever, please let us know so we can put it on the list when we make up April’s “Ten to Try” list. We love to hear what you are reading and if it is any good.
The Paige Turners (our book club) just met Sunday (don’t forget we meet the 3rd Sunday of the month if you would like to join us) we read “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah and will be reading your choice of book for April’s meeting. Come grab a book and get to reading, we’d love to have you there.
Our Winter Reading Destination Challenge is over. It ended March 2.
The winner is Jessica Mikulecky. She is the winner of $20 in chamber bucks! Congrats Jessica!
Stacie Schmidt (Ellsworth County Economic Development) will have someone available to help you get online to fill out your census. The schedule is 4 to 6 p.m. March 23; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 24; and 1 to 3 p.m. March 25.
On April Fools day we will be showing our “Featured Film” at 1:15. It is about Mister Rogers and stars Tom Hanks.
On April 4, we will have Phung and Dan come and demonstrate cooking (with your help, of course) a four-course Thai meal, including an appetizer, soup, main dish and dessert. You will enjoy making and tasting each course, Thai cultural anecdotes and learn how to “go to market” in Kansas to recreate their tasty dishes at home. There will be a cost is $30 per person we still have room for four people so get your name in before it’s too late.
And for those of you that would like to get fit and stay fit, we have the program for you it’s called — drum roll please — Get Fit/Stay Fit! This is a 45-minute program of strength training exercises. Most are performed seated or standing using a set of light dumbbells or bands.
We are starting with an eightweek program, twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) at 11 a.m. We have weights from 1 lb. to 10 lbs. so working up and getting stronger is what we are working for. It is great for muscular strength, improves balance and coordination, boost motor skills and reaction time, enhance flexibility and gait and lessen arthritic conditions. The first class is Tuesday, April 21.
Our program that was set for March 22 with Don McKnight, master falconer, has been canceled due to the current health concerns. We will try and get him to come in the fall. The other programs mentioned above are currently still a go, but please be watching in case of further cancellations.
We will be locking the doors starting this Wednesday, but the staff will still be available to take phone calls at (785) 472-3969, email jhrobbins2018@gmail.com or Facebook messaging to fill your check out requests that can be picked up at the front entrance. The decision to return to normal operation will be evaluated on a weekly basis. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but remember we have online resources to get movies, eBooks and audio books. If you don’t know what they are, give us a call or checkout our webpage (ellsworthlib.org).
Hope to see you at the library and Happy Reading!
Colleen Sippel is the director of the J.H. Robbins Memorial Library.
