Bids in for new fire station
KANOPOLIS — Kanopolis Fire Chief Dustin Neuman presented three bids for the new fire station to the City Council at its Jan. 11 meeting.
The bids were — Escape Design, $296,550.56, for a 40X120X14 building; JY Construction, $147,800, for a 40X140X16 building; and Yoder Engineered Systems, $176,784, for a 40X140X16 building.
The council didn’t take action on the bids because members wanted more information.
They also learned the fire department will take care of the heat and utilities, and Hi-Plains Sand will build the pad for the building at no charge.
Ten loads of dirt are earmarked for the project from the City of Ellsworth’s retaining pond construction project.
The city will get a 20-year loan agreement from the Firefighter’s Relief Fund at 1 percent interest. Neuman will get the loan paperwork done and find out the amount needed for a down payment. The loan paperwork will be forwarded to city attorney Patrick Hoffman for review.
A special meeting will be conducted so the council can approve everything.
City clerk Debbie Kralik will call Sam Paull to get the ground surveyed prior to building. City crew members Mike Bunch and Aaron Burwell will remove the trees on the lot.
In other business:
• Council members Jim Zvolanek and Greg Tripp, along with Mayor Anthony Hopkins, were sworn in.
• Hopkins talked to Kirkham Michael & Associates about changing engineers on the waterproject. Although it doesn’t happen often, it will cost the city more money. He asked Kralik to call BG Consultants about updates.
• Approval was given to Resolution 2022-R-02, finding the structure at 304 South Colorado unsafe or dangerous.
• Approval was given to extend 420 South Iowa to May 3.
• It was noted no progress has been made on the properties at 116 South Missouri, 520 South Iowa and 128 South Missouri.
• KA-Comm ordered the needed parts for the city sirens and once they are received the sirens will be repaired.
• PSI will begin working on the irrigation at city hall this spring.
• Hopkins asked whether Long and Associates could prepare the budget and the audit. The matter was tabled until the February meeting.
• Hopkins signed a letter of support for the North Central Regional Planning Commission in Beloit.
• Hopkins asked about the trees at the cemetery. Bunch said they will start planting in the spring.
• Hopkins received a letter regarding local government day in Topeka for anyone interested in attending.
• Kralik said she was looking into fire protection payments from Clear Creek Township. The last payment received was in 2012 for $2,500. She will contact either James Schneider or Lynn Brock regarding the payments.
• Council approved a request from Ernie Kasiska to bury his sister, Patty, with his mother. She will be cremated.
The next meeting of the Kanopolis City Council is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at city hall.
