KANOPOLIS — Members of the Kanopolis City Council learned Dec. 8 about a mishap at the new water well.

Water back flowed into the chlorine system.

Thaniel Monaco of BG Consultants is having a manufacturing representative technician investigate the problem. During the mishap, a 55-gallon barrel of chlorine was lost. Mike Bunch, city crewman, said the well cannot be used until it is repaired.

In other business:

• Vince Martin is still interested in renting the old city hall for his business. However, he is afraid he will be forced to shut it down due to COVID-19 so he would like to wait until the pandemic is over.

• Debbie Kralik, city clerk, said she contacted the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch about the siren at the fire station. Dispatch personnel will contact Motorola to see about getting the siren to work properly.

• Mayor Anthony Hopkins said he was asked by a citizen to change the length of time the noon siren sound. Currently, the siren is set to run for one minute. The citizen would like the siren set to run for 10 seconds. Kralik called KA-COMM and they will send out a bid to change the run time.

• Approval was given to renew the current health insurance plan from Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

• Approval was given to cereal malt beverage licenses for the Koyote Den, Fort Harker Saloon II and the Kanopolis Corner Store.

• Approval was given to the following 2020 Christmas bonuses for city employees: $175 for full-time employees; $75 for part-time employees and a $25 gift certificate for city council members to Orozco’s Portales and the Kanopolis Corner Store. • Aaron Burwell is interested in the free lots on South Missouri. He is buying a small cabin that he would like to put on those lots with full hookups. Kralik said she would send the request to city attorney Patrick Hoffman so he could draft a resolution. Hopkins said the council could have a special meeting to approve the resolution.

• Bunch said that there were a lot of missing or burnt bulbs on the Christmas lights. The decorations were purchased by the Civics Club. Bunch will contact the Civics Club for replacement bulbs.

• Council member Rebekah Tripp asked about Bill Weaver’s property. Hopkins asked Kralik to send him a letter asking Weaver to clean up the property. Hopkins also asked Kralik to include in the monthly newsletter post on Facebook the need for building permits in town.

Tripp then asked about the property on North Colorado. Bunch said there is a lot of junk on the property and a track loader would be needed to clean it. Council member Tom Wilkinson suggested setting a budgetary amount for abatements, so the council does not overspend.

• Wilkenson asked about the new water tower. BG Consultants did not provide an update. Kralik said she checked with the Ellsworth County Historical Society about using the location next to the Fort Harker Museum, and there would be no problem placing the tower there.

• Kralik said there was a sewer leak in the alley between the properties of Stacy Hicks and Lynn Brock. Bunch called City Plumbing to repair it. The leak was found to be on Brock’s property. Kralik will send the bill to Brock for payment.
