Library has 60 days to vacate former school

The Central Plains School Board Monday night approved giving the Farmer’s Township Library 60 days written notice that they have to vacate the former Bushton school by June 30.

Board president Brad Schiermeyer said giving the library notice by the end of June (the end of the fiscal year) would give them enough time to find another location.

“There’s a lot of challenges going on right now that are probably made worse by the COVID-19 situation we’re in,” board member Tony Zink added.

“When commerce goes down within the state, tax revenue is not collected at the rate it is normally collected at,” Zink said. “Tax revenue is directly related to school funding.”

Zink said the district has worked in the last 24 months to prepare the district to move forward for 20 years.

“All that was based on the state being able to fund at the level they say they will be able to fund at,” he said.

“We’ll be okay this year,” Clark said.

“If it (COVID-19) does impact the state’s revenue and then if it were to impact the funding for all the schools, including our district, that could be pretty significant for a district our size who is trying to be as financially responsible as we can and not have to go into the contingency fund.”
