Lorraine’s water level is up

LORRAINE — The water table in Lorraine is rising. At the Feb. 18 meeting of the Lorraine City Council, Larry Klug, maintenance director, said the city’s water well has two more feet of water now than at this time last year.

Klug said Doug Guenther of the Kansas Rural Water Association measured the height of the water from the top of the well down to the surface of the water. It measured 83 feet, 7 inches.

“That’s a good thing for us,” said city clerk Michael Boyer.

In other business:

• Authorization was given for Klug, Eric Vedder, manager of the Central Prairie Coop in Lorraine, and Joe Travnichek, fire chief, to operate the city tractor and all of the firefighters on the Lorraine Fire Department roster to operate Lorraine Fire Department vehicles.

• Approval was given to the city applying for a credit card to purchase small items already allocated in the city budget. City attorney Theresa Staudinger recommended a credit card and not a debit card to protect the city from unauthorized users and to protect the city’s bank account.

• Mayor Kim Travnichek said she is still waiting for a backup generator for the city.

• Joe Travnichek said the two stop signs ordered for the city are here but need to be paid for so they can be delivered.

• Joe Travnichek reminded the council members to get an identification card from the Ellsworth County Emergency Management Department so they can access disaster areas. He suggested they see Deb Habiger at the county health department to fill out the necessary paperwork.

• Boyer said the city received the new mosquito fogger from Winfield United in Wichita. He also completed the quarterly and annual taxes, filed the annual composting facility report with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and completed the boundary/annexation survey for the U.S. Census Bureau.

• No action was taken after returning from a 15-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel.

The next meeting of the Lorraine City Council will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at city hall.
