Loveland joins Wilson city council

WILSON — Yet another new face is now on the Wilson City Council.

At the Sept. 5 council meeting, Jessica Loveland was approved by the council after being appointed by Mayor Dan Taylor. Loveland filled the vacancy left when Taylor recently assumed the duties of mayor following Mike Peschka’s resignation as mayor.

Loveland joins new council member Heather Claussen, who was also approved by the council recently to fill the vacancy left by Darcy-Hubka-Vopat’s resignation.

In other business:

• Patty Scappell said there are as many barking dogs in Wilson as there are chickens.

“At night I hear dogs everywhere barking,” she said. “I have a rooster and I don’t think it’s right.”

• Kristofer Ritchie asked about the status of the mayor and two council openings on the November general election ballot, given Peschka’s recent resignation as well as the recent actions regarding council seats.

Taylor said if Peschka won the most votes but declined to accept the position, then the person getting the most writein ballots during the election would be mayor. As far as the two city council positions are concerned, he said the top two vote-getters would fill those seats.

City Clerk Susan Kriley said June was the cut-off to run for council or mayor. She said as of that deadline, whoever filed is who is on the ballot.

“After that deadline in June, there’s no way to change the ballot,” she said. “It’s out of the city’s hands. We have nothing to do with the election.”

Dan Erdman asked what the likelihood was of Peschka accepting the mayorship again since he recently resigned that office.

“You’d have to ask Mike,” Taylor said. “That’s his decision.”

• Loveland turned in her resignation as a member of the city board of health due to her city council appointment.

• The council delayed, by consensus, discussion and action on possible changes to the inoperable vehicle ordinance 729 so the new council members could review it.

• Review of the current ban on pit bulls and pit bull mixes was tabled until the Sept. 18 meeting so the new council members could review them further.

• Further discussion and action on what to charge patrons using the city’s new waterman was tabled until more information becomes available.

• No action was taken after a seven minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel (the police department).

• Kriley said a conductor which failed in the air conditioning system at city hall has been repaired. She also said Uhl Construction will begin by the end of September on the garage directly north of city hall at 2405 Ave. E. The work will be paid for using funds from a Kansas Department of Transportation AIT grant.

• Kriley said Colin Connell backed out of working for the city as part of the School to Work program.

• Consensus approval was given to City Superintendent Joe Soukup to get bids for two attachments for the city’s skid steer and a trailer.

• No action was taken on a request by Frank Princ to plant a tree on his plot at Wilson City Cemetery.

• Approval was given to a request by Wilson Police Chief James Reagan to purchase a Microsoft Go 2 laptop computer, keyboard and case in an amount not to exceed $550.

The next meeting of the Wilson City Council is at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at city hall.
