Peschka resigns as Wilson mayor

WILSON — An unexpected resignation and several appointments brought change to the Wilson City Council at Monday’s meeting of the governing body.

After three-and-a-half years as mayor, Mike Peschka submitted his resignation, effective immediately.

“As you all know, the last few months I have not been able to fully participate as mayor,” Peschka said via Zoom. “I really appreciate everyone stepping up. So, tonight, to the Wilson City Council, due to personal reasons, I’m resigning as mayor of the City of Wilson, effective Aug. 21, 2023.”

Peschka asked the council to accept his resignation.

“It has been my distinct honor to serve this community for the last three-and-a-half years,” he said. “Working with a very supportive council and a great staff, many goals were accomplished, but there are many that still need to be completed. I know you will continue to strive to make Wilson the best it can be and serve the residents in their best interest.”

Dan Taylor, who was president of the council, immediately became mayor. In turn, Taylor appointed council member Jeff Keith as council president. Taylor also nominated Heather Claussen to fill the vacant council seat previously occupied by Darcy Hubka-Vopat. The council approved the appointments.

Taylor and Claussen were sworn in to office by City Clerk Susan Kriley.

The council also approved the appointment of James Reagan as Wilson Police Chief.

In other business:

• After a brief public hearing, the 2024 Wilson City budget was approved as presented. It was noted the city plans to use the same number of budget dollars in 2024 as it did in 2023.

There was no public comment during the hearing.

• Wilson resident Kristofer Ritchie asked Taylor if Peschka is the only one running for mayor in the general election in November. Taylor said to his knowledge, Peschka’s name is the only one that appears on the ballot.

“I honestly don’t know how that’s all going to play out,” Taylor said. “I don’t know if he’ll decide at that point in time whether or not he’s able or wants to do it.”

Taylor said a variety of scenarios could play out.

“Technically, my tenure would be until November and then that would be it,” Taylor added.

• Approval was given to remove the property at 2305 Ave. D from the board of health violation list at the recommendation of board of health member Dr. David Sells. It was noted the owner of 2309 Ave. D, the other property on the list, has requested a hearing which will take place at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at city hall. It was also noted the owner has stated they should be able to get the property cleaned up by that meeting.

• Further discussion on the rate to be charged for the new Waterman will be placed on the council agenda for the next meeting.

• Colin Connell of Sylvan Grove was approved to work part-time for the City of Wilson from Aug. 30 through mid-December as part of the school-to-work program. He will be paid minimum wage, which will total $2,000.

• A motion to increase the sewer tap fee from $100 to $150 with the saddle and from $75 to $100 without the saddle was approved.

Before closing the meeting, Taylor said he wished Peschka the very best and thanked him for all he did for Wilson.

“He was very vested in the community,” Taylor said.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the next meeting of the Wilson City Council will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at city hall.
