Recycling to resume in Ellsworth County

By
Teri L. Hansen

Since December, Ellsworth has been without recycling services. Though the city didn’t have curbside recycling, it did have a drop-off point for recyclables that residents could utilize. When the receptacles were full, Ellsworth County Noxious Weed Department Director Teresa Shute, who also oversees the recycling program and landfill, would call Chris Behrens of CB Trucking to haul the refuse to Lincoln for processing.

That process was stalled for months when Slechta Enterprises took over the building in Lincoln where the recycling was processed. As of March 3, recycling will once again be accepted and Behrens will be providing pick-up service for the county.

“We are grateful that we will be back up and running with this,” Shute said. “He has procured the old school house in Lincoln to use for recycling processing. From there, the recyclables head to Wichita or Kansas City.”

Acceptable recycling products include newspapers and any ads or flyers in them, magazines, clear plastic (anything with a No. 1 on the bottom), cardboard (goes in the horse trailer inside the building), milk jugs, tin cans, noncorrugated cardboard, junk mail, shredded paper (bagged) and aluminum cans.

“Make sure that you are putting things in the proper containers,” Shute said, “because if there is a whole lot of trash in there, we will get shut down permanently. We don’t have time to go through it and neither does Chris (Behrens).”
