Wilson to team with Central Plains for volleyball

HOLYROOD — Girls volleyball at Wilson High School and Central Plains Junior-Senior High School in Claflin will look a little different for the 2021 season due to numbers.

At Monday’s meeting of the Central Plains USD 112 board of education, approval was given to have girls from Wilson High School who wish to play volleyball this next school year to do so on the Central Plains Junior-Senior High School Lady Oiler’s volleyball team.

Superintendent Greg Clark said there are only five or six girls interested in going out for volleyball in Wilson and this would be the only way to field a competitive team. He emphasized this decision would be for one year only, and would be revisited the following year if necessary.

Toby Holmes, CPJSHS principal, said he had talked several times with Tony Brokes, Wilson’s athletic director. Both think this is the best solution.

In other business:

• A preschool program for 3-year-olds was approved. Theresa Heinrich, who is already employed by the district, will be in charge of the classes — one two days a week at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood, and one two days a week at Wilson School. Classes will run from 12:30 to 3:20 p.m. Clark said the program could have at least 20 children. He cautioned, however, the program is a non-starter if the district doesn’t start normal in-school classes in the fall.

• Chris Conrade of Conrade Insurance of Newton, gave an overall presentation on property insurance coverage to the board. Due to a combination of weather claims, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other claims, Conrade said several insurance companies are no longer able to offer insurance in Kansas. As a result, the Kansas Association of School Boards has developed a risk sharing pool for Kansas public schools to purchase property insurance through. Board member Tony Zink, who

Board member Tony Zink, who works in the insurance field, said he would like the district to look at another policy, if available, from another company, for comparison purposes before a decision is made.

• The following were approved — Kiley Klug as an English teacher at CPJSHS; Tristen Denham as an elementary school teacher at Wilson; Drew Kirmer as the USD 112 representative on the Claflin Recreation Commission; Toby Holmes as driver’s education teacher for Wilson and Central Plains schools.

• Clark said the district will see an increase of $27,718 for special education next school year. Clark said while he doesn’t like the increase, he was one of the superintendents in the Salina-based Central Kansas Cooperative in Education (CKCIE) special education cooperative who voted for it because USD 112 cannot afford to provide special education by itself.

• Clark said high school graduation ceremonies will take place for the Class of 2020 at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 5, at the CPJSHS gym in Claflin and on Saturday, July 25, in the Wilson School gym. The time for the Wilson School graduation ceremony will be announced.

• Clark said the district is slated to receive an extra $102,576 next year. He cautioned, however, this does not mean there will be extra money for teacher’s raises. He said the district faces increases in the cost of property insurance coverage and in special education.

• No action was taken after returning from an executive session to discuss non-elected personnel (the principal position at Wilson School).

• The district will conduct its end of the year meeting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, at CPES in Holyrood. The next regular meeting of the

The next regular meeting of the Central Plains USD 112 board of education will be at 6 p.m. Monday, July 13, at CPES.
