USD 112 continues to look forward - the rest of the story

The following is the rest of the USD 112 story from Page B3 of the Feb. 27 I-R:

Sechrist said the committee has decided to wait until May to meet again.
“One of the reasons was that if the board chooses to do a reconfiguration study, we thought that futures committee could be valuable with some interpretation of some of that information,” he said. “But until then, we didn’t really feel like we had a purpose.”
Board member Tony Zink, who, in large part, has been a supporter of the futures committee since its formation, said he may be having second thoughts about it.
“I’ve said it before — there is no win-win situation for some of the challenges we have,” Zink said. “But there darn sure is a lose-lose. We need to stay away from that as much as possible. I felt like people on the committee, coming together from the different portions of the community, was a good idea.”
Zink said there are a lot of challenging issues facing USD 112 which the board will tackle in the months ahead.
“Some of which has to do in fact —financial stuff, buildings, how we’re going to move forward,” he said. “Some of it has to do with rumors.”
Zink pointed to a letter raising concerns that the board is considering moving seventh through 12th grade students from Wilson to Claflin.
“I understand the concern behind this, but I worry that when this gets put out, it raises something that we are not doing — we’re not considering this right now,” Zink added. “We’re just trying to find a way to move forward — to find a solution for 10, 15 or 20 years.”
Zink said things like this are not productive.
“When I look at the futures committee, I always thought this committee would go beyond that,” he said. “And that’s why I’ve been vocal in supporting them.”
Zink then said he wasn’t sure he was right in his hopes.
“I think the concept is valid,” he said. “I am not overly confident the communities are willing to do that after seeing things and hearing things like the people who come up and talk about the rumors I heard, and the hard decisions that are in front of us.”
Zink said he is concerned not only with the futures committee, but whether the communities are really willing to try to look forward.
“Or, are there people out there trying to find a way to meet their own agenda?” he asked.
Zink said if the board decides to cease the activity of the futures committee he would respect the board’s wishes.
“Again, I still support the people, I believe it’s a good concept, I’m just not sure it’s working at this time,” he said.
