USD 112 expands security, discusses childcare centers

CLAFLIN — Enhanced security is coming to Wilson School and Central Plains Junior-Senior High School in Claflin.

At Monday’s meeting of the Central Plains USD 112 board of education, bids from INA Alert of Ellinwood of $117,000 for CPJSHS and $35,819 for Wilson School were approved. The bids are for the installation of vaping detectors at both schools as well as door access systems, security cameras and remote monitoring.

In other business:

• Superintendent Greg Clark acknowledged the efforts of the district’s custodial and maintenance personnel — Lesle Wright, Tim Pflughoeft, Brent Wimmer, Becky Whitmer, Angie Prester, Callie Ploutz, Dustin Vopat and Jan Shaw.

“They are an awesome crew,” he said. “They do a great job.”

• J.R. Robl gave an update on the district’s daycare plans at both ends of USD 112. He wrote and submitted a grant application voluntarily on behalf of the district to the Kansas Department of Commerce in May. There were 50 applicants for 30 slots. The grant recipients will be announced on July 1

The 1,250 square foot child care center planned for Wilson will be located inside Wilson School and have 24 openings for children.

In Claflin, a 68’ by 24’ prefabricated structure to house daycare is planned. It will have 20 slots for children ages 3-5, as well as eight openings for infants. It will be located near the community center in order to have access to playground facilities.

• Jessie Pepper of Trane discussed the air conditioning situation at Wilson School. Two new compressors have already been approved by the board for installation, but he requested the board consider purchasing two more compressors. Clark agreed with that request. However, members of the board would like to see what the installation of a pressure switch will do to increase power to the system first.

• No action was taken after a 15 minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel (employee contract).

• A bid of $118,050 from Washington Roofing was approved to seal the seams on the roofs at both Central Plains Elementary School and Wilson School. Clark said a coating much like a bed liner for a pickup truck — only thicker — will be sprayed on the metal roof of each buildings to seal the leaks into the interior.

• The board will have a budget hearing at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, during a special meeting at CPES. It will be available on Zoom. Clark said the budget needs to be republished because word of the district’s appeal of its audit has not been received yet from the state. He said the district is wanting up to $411,220 in budget authority because it still owes Graduation Alliance money for graduation credits the state is denying. In addition, the state wants to cut the USD 112 budget by $189,000.

“It’s tight,” Clark said of next school year’s budget.

He noted enrollment will be down again.

Board clerk Diane Ney said the $189,000 cut may or may not happen. Or it could be less.

• The board’s end-of-the-year meeting will be at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at CPES. The meeting will be available on Zoom.

The next regular meeting of the USD 112 board of education will be at 6 p.m. Monday, July 11, at CPES.
