Basketball coaching staff to change
Fans of the Ellsworth High School Bearcats basketball teams will see some different faces along the sidelines when players begin their 2022-23 season.
Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District board members, meeting in regular session Monday night, accepted a coaching lineup that included the resignations of six basketball coaches and assistant coaches.
Among them was Ken Cravens, who has served as head coach of the girls’ basketball team since 2010. He will continue to teach science and industrial arts at the high school.
Also on the resignation list were: Ryan Peschka and Ryan Webber, boys’ basketball coaches; Nick Rodriguez, junior high school boys; Laura Kyler, junior high school girls; and Lance Stefek, assistant coach for high school boys.
Board members also accepted the continued sports duties of Josh Homolka, as head football coach; Eric Coonrod, junior-senior high school cross country, Eric Anderson, tennis; Amy Johnson, volleyball; Steve Thorburn, wrestling; Nick Rodriguez, juniorsenior high school track; Jason McWilliams, baseball; and Ken Cravens, softball.

In other business:
• The district’s newly hired superintendent, Deena Hilbig of Salina and John Cannon of Lyons attended the meeting.
• The board approved the hiring of Crystal Feldkamp and Saraya Johnson as substitute teachers.
• Members also approved the resignations of Dan Magie as forensics coach; Abby Harmon as high school secretary; and Cindy Choitz, who plans to retire Aug. 1 as head custodian at the elementary school.
• The use of money — not to exceed $90,395 — the district receives from wind farms in lieu of property taxes was approved by the board for technology purchases following a presentation from Dan Magie. Total cost of the proposal is $126,205, but the difference will be paid by grants and other sources.
• The board accepted a gift of $500 from Oneok for the baseball program related to volunteer hours from former teacher Bernie Schulte and two $300 gifts for the tennis and track programs from Cats Pride.
