Members of the USD 327 Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District Monday night looked ahead to the Nov. 7 general election and unanimously approved a resolution redrawing district position boundaries. The action, the result of the 2020 Census, equalizes population numbers.

New boundaries are:

• District 1 — All of Ellsworth Township not incorporated into the City of Ellsworth, 1,706 residents to 1,569.

District 2 — The portion of Ellsworth City north of the south rightof-way of West Old Highway 40 and west of Kansas Highway 14, 1,472 residents to 1,557.

• District 3 — West and south of West Old Highway 40 and its intersection with the center line of North Grand Avenue extended, 1,486 patrons to 1,538.

The district has four open positions. Filing deadline is noon June 1.

Those seats are currently filled by: District No. 1, Position No. 1 — Steve Shepherd; District No. 2, Position No. 2 — Gina McGowan; District No. 2, Position No. 5 — Cynthia Edgerle; and District-at-Large, Position No. 7 — Ashley Bohl.

In other business:

• Board members accepted several gifts — $1,000 from the Ellsworth Correctional Facility for junior high school track; $310 from the Leonard Parks memorial for academics; $195 from the First Presbyterian Church to pay student library fees at Ellsworth Elementary School; $4,500 from a variety of local businesses for the Bearcat Youth Leadership Academy; and $500 from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation for Eric Conrood’s government class to visit the Kansas Capitol.

• Board president Cynthia Edgerle congratulated Karl Dawn Stover, who was named a Region 1 semi-finalist for the Kansas Teacher of the Year Program.

Basketball players named to the NCAA All-League teams — Will Cravens and Riley Stone, first team, and Lane Rolfs, honorable mention; and Greta Klein and Lainey Peschka, first team.

Edgerle also thanked EES teachers and staff for their organization of the March 23 math and literacy night. More than 140 participated.

She also recognized Chase Bourbon for being named a 2023 Governor’s Scholar.

• The board approved $13,959 in wind farm money for three interactive flat panels and a cart for an existing device.

• Board members tabled action on textbook fees to give the board time to think about the issue after Superintendent Deena Hilbig outlined a plan that would combine textbook and technology fees for all grades.

• Graduation will be Sunday, May 14.

The school board’s next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, May 8, at the district office in Ellsworth.
