Wilson’s Spray Park reopens

By
Alan Rusch

WILSON — The Wilson PRIDE Spray Park is back up and running again, Wilson City Superintendent Joe Soukup announced during the July 5 meeting of the Wilson City Council.

Wilson Mayor Mike Peschka said the park was hit by a lightning strike recently and went down. However, repairs were recently finished and everything is running as it should, according to Soukup.

In other business:

• After a 10-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel (the public compliance officer job), the council approved hiring Jennifer Keller at a wage of $150 per month.

• The council decided to table further discussion until the July 18 meeting on the city owned property at 2504 Ave. E.

Mayor Mike Peschka said he was contacted by a person inquiring about possibly purchasing the property, now that the structure, the former Otasco building, has been demolished and hauled off. He thought the person was considering the space for a parking lot.

Peschka said the council has three options: sell the property, keep it or do something with it for the city.

Council member Chuck Crawford suggested the council sell three of the four 25-foot lots, with the city retaining the fourth.

Other council members suggested making the space into a tennis court, basketball court or a park with a farmer’s market. Council member Darcy Hubka Vopat, who suggested a tennis court, said she would like to see something done with the space.

Council member Dan Taylor said the lots should be sold by the city. Vopat noted any sale should be open to all of the public.

• A brief public hearing was conducted before the council meeting on the property at 408 24th St. The council approved an extension until July 18 for the owner to have all board of health violations corrected.

• During a review of the list of properties with board of health violations, the council cleared the property at 2304 Ave. I from the list since all violations were corrected.

• The property at 705 24th St. was also approved to be cleared from the violations list pending removal of a bush pile.

• Recommendations for adjustments to the city’s service fee schedule were tabled.

• Approved purchasing a 2-inch air release valve for city water well number five. The valve will be purchased from Salina Supply for $982.02. Soukup said the current release valve malfunctioned and needs to be replaced.

The next meeting of the Wilson City Council will be at 6 p.m. Monday, July 18, at city hall.

However, two board of health hearings are scheduled before the meeting. One is at 5:30 p.m. and the other is at 5:45 p.m.
