Wilson City Council denies goat wavier
WILSON — Mayor Mike Peschka broke a 2-2 tie Monday, to deny a request by David Criswell, owner of Kansas Foods, LLC, for a waiver of the animal ordinance to keep no more than 20 (7 adult female and 13 juvenile) Nigerian dwarf goats at 720 26th Street on thewest edge of Wilson.
The 3-2 vote of the Wilson City Council came after a 15- minute public hearing before the regularly schedule council meeting.
Criswell, who is a council member but abstained from the vote, said this will be a productive business activity and will bring tourists to Wilson.
“The issue being brought up by the council members, by residents of the city is not whether goat poop stinks,” Peschka said. “The issue is they do not want goats in the City of Wilson.”
“I just don’t believe it’s fair to say the community doesn’t want this,” Criswell said.
In other business:
• Dr. David Sells of Wilson, a retired veterinarian and head of the city’s board of health, said his name has been slandered by one specific council member.
“And I’m getting sick and tired of the crap,” he said. “I’ve listened to it for months and I want it straightened out.”
Sells said he is a graduate of Kansas State University and the College of Veterinary Medicine and has practiced for 14 years in a mixed animal practice.
“I’m not just a retired dog and cat vet,” he said. “I actually do have knowledge of other animals.”
Sells said if the person mentions his name in a nasty manner again or says anything bad about him, he will hire a lawyer and sue him for slander and defamation of character.
The next meeting of the Wilson City Council is at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at city hall.
