Wilson supporters request meeting with USD 112

Aletter was delivered Friday to the USD 112 Central Plains board of education office, again requesting a one-year extension for Wilson Jr./Sr. High School.

The letter was from Topeka-based attorney Joshua Ney, who has previously represented interests of Wilsonarea residents in regard to the upcoming closure of the school.

“This letter is being sent to request a one-year delay of the closing of the Wilson Attendance Center, grades 7-12, in lieu of our imminent filing of a petition to disorganize the district,” attorney Joshua Ney wrote. “My clients have collected the requisite number of signatures to file a petition triggering an election on the question of USD 112’s disorganization but are intentionally holding off for a few days in order to engage the board one last time in hope of reaching a solution for the 2023-2024 school year.”

The attorney was referring to K.S.A. 72-635, which stipulates the parameters for disorganizing a school district by vote.

Residents of the Wilson and Dorrance areas have gathered enough signatures to put the question of disorganization on the ballot.

In the letter, Joshua Ney further requested a special meeting on or before May 1 for a final negotiation attempt.

USD 112 Interim Superintendent Bill Lowry said a special meeting may be called by the board president or three board members. As of press time, no meeting was called.

The USD 112 board previously voted twice against extending the closure of WJSHS.
