WJSHS students attend new schools
CLAFLIN — School has been in session a few weeks now and what that looks like to some is different while to others it’s the same. With the closure of Wilson Jr./Sr. High School, the 73 students who attended found new schools. Some, obviously, went on to post-secondary pursuits, however, the others had to look long and hard at their options.
Three students chose to continue their education in USD 112 according to Interim Superintendent Bill Lowry. There are currently 80 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade at Central Plains Elementary School. In middle school, there are 31 eighth-graders and 19 seventh-graders. At the high school level, there are 10 seniors, 26 juniors, 24 sophomores and 27 freshmen. This brings the total number of students at Central Plains Jr./Sr. High School to 137. This number is two students less than last year’s census.
“Overall, we’re remaining pretty consistent,” Lowry said. “I think we’re off to a good start of the school year.”
Sylvan-Lucas Unified School District gained a number of the students who left USD 112. According to Superintendent Jeff Starkey, the district gained 46 students from USD 112.
Ellsworth- Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327 also gained a few students. Current enrollment numbers put 41 students from USD 112 into USD 327.
With change comes challenges. The bigs and littles program at Wilson Elementary School is still working to get off the ground and will likely pair youngsters with older Central Plains students now that the Wilson juniors and seniors are no longer available, but Lowry has high hopes for the school year.
“The staff is doing a great job during the transition,” he said. “We are providing what our students need, and that is the important part.”
