KANOPOLIS — James Zvolanek was sworn in as the newest member of the Kanopolis City Council May 11, during the monthly meeting at Kanopolis City Hall.

Zvolanek succeeds Pat Perez, who resigned.

In other business:

• City clerk Debbie Kralik said she has not received any updates from engineer Thaniel Monaco of BG Consultants on the water project. She did receive three invoices for the preliminary design phase.

• City employee Mike Bunch received a letter from Doug Guenther of the Kansas Rural Water Association, stating the new water well system is overly complicated. He also thinks the new system will fail again and the components used will be expensive to replace. He also doesn’t think the new system will pass Division of Water Resources inspection. Mayor Anthony Hopkins asked Kralik to e-mail the letter to Monaco for review.

• Kralik said she received a phone call regarding the property at 220 N. Colorado. She was told the property owners were starting to work on the property but got a flat tire on their truck. Then their mower broke down and parts had to be ordered. Council members Tom Wilkinson and Jim Zvolanek said that all the property owners did was move a few items, but no progress was really made.

• Kralik said Kanopolis Police Chief Jeff Weigel gave her two more letters to mail to Bill Weaver and Peter Eck.

• Hopkins asked about the property at N. Iowa. Kralik said the letter mailed last year was returned unclaimed. Hopkins would like Chief Weigel to hand deliver a letter to the owner.

• After a 10-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel (annual pay raises), three extra vacation days were approved for Mike Bunch and Debbie Kralik. Aaron Burwell was given a $400 bonus in lieu of a financial increase and Jess Oplinger was raised to $14 per hour.

• Kralik said she has not received updated insurance quotes. Hopkins said a special meeting will be scheduled to approve payment when they are received.

• Sam Paull will start platting at the city cemetery at a cost of $300 per block. Hopkins would like to meet with Paull and Bunch to discuss the project.
