‘Cat track team hits the road to Russell
RUSSELL — The Ellsworth High School track and field teams kicked off the 2019 season on the road during the Russell Invitational on Friday at Shaffer Field. Other high school teams competing in the meet were Russell, Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic, Plainville and Thomas More Prep-Marian. Plainville won the girls’ and boys’ team titles. Ellsworth had several strong individual performances, including first-place finishes on the boys’ team from Josiah Bolton in 1600- and 3200-meter runs, Kash Travnichek in the 110-meter hurdles and Luke Dunn in the javelin. On the girls’ team, Shaylee Leiker took first in the 400-meter dash, and Joni Schroeder took the gold in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. “It was warm and windy to start and finished windy and cool,” EHS head track coach Nick Rodriguez said.“It was not a bad start to the 2019 season. It allowed us to get some times, distances and some height clearances to start this season. The athletes continue to work hard and give us great effort on the track and in the field. We had several athletes post decent marks to start the 2019 season. We just need to keep working every day to get better.”
