Not bad for a small meet. The skies cleared long enough for a small but talented field to compete Friday in Ellinwood.

One state leader emerged from the meet. The Lady Cats finished fourth in the field behind Sterling, Ellinwood, and St. John. The Ellsworth boys placed fifth, just six points out of third. The Central Plains girls and boys finished sixth and seventh, respectively, out of nine teams.

Lady Bearcat sophomore Shaylee Leiker continued her reign as one of the top sprinters in Class 2A with a sweep of those events. The 100m dash field included two other returning state qualifiers in Ellinwood’s LaTaja Gray and Sterling’s Grace Rowland. Leiker, ranked No. 1 in 2A this spring, won the race by 0.12 seconds in 12.66.“It’s definitely good to have those people there to help make my times better,” Leiker said.
