Caldwell hands season ending loss to Oilers football team

CALDWELL — Caldwell shocked Central Plains at the start and finish to upset the Oilers 36-34 in Friday’s 8-Man Division 2 second round football playoff game. Bluejay Jude Stow scored the game-winning touchdown and intercepted the game-ending pass by Oiler quarterback Michael Laymon. The Bluejays trailed 34-22, but scored the game’s final two touchdowns. The Oilers committed turnovers on their final two drives.

Statistically, the Oilers had 57 rushing plays for a total of 228 yards, averaging 4 yards a carry. Gus Menges led the rushing effort for Central Plains, carrying the ball 30 times for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was followed by Michael Laymon, who carried the ball 15 times for 53 yards and 2 touchdowns. Oiler Cole Lamatsch had 7 carries for 29 yards and 1 touchdown, while Dawson McNeal had 5 carries for 10 yards.

In the air, Michael Laymon was 10 for 16 for 94 yards and the 1 interception.

Menges led the Oilers in receiving during the game with 5 catches for 53 yards, followed by Lamatsch with 4 carries for 43 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Oilers’ William Laymon had 8 unassisted and 3 assisted tackles, Cole Lamatsch had 6 unassisted and 5 assisted tackles, Michael Laymon had 6 unassisted and 5 assisted tackles, with Dawson McNeal getting 5 unassisted and 3 assisted tackles. Tyler Holmes had 5 unassisted and 2 assisted tackles, with Michael Menges getting 4 unassisted and 1 assisted tackle. Central Plains’ Karter Beck had 3 unassisted and 3 assisted tackles, Matthew Donecke had 2 unassisted and 2 assisted tackles, and Blain Hickel had 1 unassisted tackle.

Caldwell’s defeat of the Oilers was the second season-ending game the Bluejays have engineered against an area team in the past two weeks. Last Friday, the Wilson Dragons fell to the Bluejays in a heartbreaker.

Coach Chris Steiner and his Oilers end the season with a 6-2 record.
