Dragons notch wins at start of 2020-21 season
The Lady Dragons return three starters from the 2019-20 team.
The experience has paid off.
So far this season, Wilson’s victories have included Natoma, which ended in a score of 32-25.
Lady Dragon Anna Thielen led all scorers with 14 points while Kami Thrasher added 11 points, including three 3-point baskets.
This past Friday, the girls dropped a game to Lincoln, but not until after the Lady Dragons staged a valiant rally down the stretch.
“We need to get better game by game head coach Ted Long said in his pre-season assessment.” We need to stay healthy only having eight players on the team.”
In addition to Thielen, a freshman guard, and Thrasher, a senior guard, starters are Grace Bohnen, sophomore guard; Kaylee Boxberger, senior forward; and Cara Criswell, sophomore guard. Key reserves are Bryna Hill, senior forward; Skylar Cullens, freshman forward; and Avery Anderson, freshman guard.
Wilson takes on Southern Cloud Jan. 8 at home.
The Wilson boys lost to Natoma, 65-42, but came roaring back several days later with a win at Lincoln.
Dragon Camryn Eberhart scored 18 points as Wilson rallied from a fourth quarter deficit and withstood a missed game-tying three-point basket at the buzzer to defeat the Lincoln Leopards 44-41 in Northern Plains League action Friday night at Lincoln JuniorSenior High School.
The contest was back and forth almost from the start. After Wilson scored the game’s first four points, Lincoln went on an 8-2 surge to lead 8-6 before the Dragons reclaimed the lead 11-10 after the first eight minutes. In the second quarter, the Leopards were ahead 19-15 before Wilson went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 22-19 but Lincoln countered with an 8-0 run of their own and led 27-22 at intermission.
The Leopards led by as many as six points in the third quarter before the Dragons closed the gap to 34-32 by the period’s end. In the fourth quarter, an Eberhart basket put Wilson in front 37-36 and the Dragons upped their advantage to 40-36 on a three-pointer by Noah Crawford. Wilson stayed ahead thanks to clutch field goals by Eberhart and Dylan Crawford as well as two big free throws by Eberhart with 15 seconds left to make the score 44-41.
Lincoln drove down the court in the final seconds and caught a break when a near turnover turned into a held ball, giving the Leopards one more chance with the possession arrow pointing in their direction with just over four seconds left. Then, Tyler Good who had knocked down four three-pointers during the game saw what would have been his fifth trey that would have sent the game to overtime go part way down the cylinder, roll around and eventually fall out giving the Dragons a heart-stopping win.
Eberhart led all scorers with 18 points for Wilson while Good led Lincoln with 14 points.
Following the holiday break, Wilson is in action at home against Southern Cloud.
