EHS tennis brings home league title

The Ellsworth Lady ‘Cats tennis team traveled to Russell Monday, Oct. 7, and returned home with an NCAA league title.

That makes 10 years in a row the team has won league, the last two times under coach Deb Talbott.

The Ellsworth No. 1 doubles team of Jaide Talbott and Jaycee Cunningham posted three wins for 1st place. The duo defeated Beloit, 8-1; Russell, 8-1; and Salina’s Sacred Heart, 8-0.

Ellsworth’s No. 2 doubles team of Maggie Windholz and Nicole Haase also took 1st place with wins over Sacred Heart, 8-4; and Beloit, 8-3.

The Lady ‘Cats No. 1 singles player, Stephanie Soukup lost to Beloit’s Sydney Everisto, 0-8; won against Russell’s Jordynn Guenot, 8-1; and lost to Isabella Mattetucci of Sacred Heart, 1-8, for 3rd place.

Ellsworth’s Cassie Most also landed in 3rd place in No. 2 singles with a win over Russell’s Janae Shulte, 8-1; and a loss against Jayci Shepard of Sacred Heart, 4-8.

The Lady ‘Cats compete Friday and Saturday at Phillipsburg in the 3-2-1A Regional.
