Two Ellsworth Bearcats came home Thursday, April 1, from the Russell Invitational with first place wins.

Madison Kelley was first in shot put with 33’.5” and Trey Anderson plaed first in the 22m dash with a time of 22.88m.

“For the opening meet of the season, this was a good start to 2021,” coach Nick Rodriguez said. “A majority of our team this was their first high school experience in track and field. We have a few experienced junior and seniors but losing last season [because of COVID-19] was huge for everyone.

“The male sprinters as a group had a really good meet as well as the throwers.

“Our female sprinters outside of Shaylee [Leiker] are very young and inexperienced.

“We only have two guys running any distance races right now and both of them placed in both of their races. This first meet really was more of practice with some other competitors from other schools.

“It was nice to have F.A.T. timing to keep our times accurate although in the girls 200m Dash, two other heats had a timing malfunction.

“Thursday laid a foundation of what we need to work on in future weeks and how can we get better. It also provides the coaching staff a little insight to where we can get better.

“There is potential in this team to make some huge improvements and take the next step.”
