Ellsworth makes a big slash at home
The Ellsworth High School baseball team won big this past week over Ellinwood, defeating the Eagles 12-2 at home. The Bearcats squared off against the Eagles during an April 9 double header.
The Bearcats’ offense was fired up in the first inning when Grant Gwinner singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs. Ellsworth went on to score four points in the opening inning and three runs in the second, including a home run by Gavin Tully.
The Bearcats kept the hot streak going by notching four more runs in the fifth inning. Players Bransen Schulte, Kordel Kriley, Gwinner and Tully powered the big inning with RBIs.
Jace Turnipseed took the win for Ellsworth, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out six in four innings. Gwinner relieved Turnipseed, and pitched one inning.
The Bearcats racked up 11 hits on the day, as Tully, Gwinner and Schulte all recorded multiple hits for Ellsworth. Schulte, Gwinner and Tully each had two hits.
Ellsworth 11, Ellinwood 1
The Ellsworth Bearcats easily handled the Ellinwood Eagles 11-1 April 9, winning the second game of a two-game series.
Ellinwood got things going in the first inning, scoring one run on a single. But soon, Ellsworth scored four runs at the Bearcats’ first at bat. Ellsworth notched five runs in the fourth inning. The runs resulted from an error on a ball put in play by John Kyler and Bransen Schulte and a single by Gavin Tully.
Pitcher Braden Schulte earned the win for Ellsworth, allowing one run on four hits and 10 strikeouts. Ellsworth’s Kordel Kriley, Grant Gwinner, Tully and Tristan Soukup each had one hit.
The Bearcats had zero errors.
Minneapolis 17, Ellsworth 0
After easily handling Ellinwood earlier in the week, the Ellsworth Bearcats had a difficult time in Minneapolis April 11, losing both games to the Lions.
In the first game, Ellsworth was defeated 17-0.
Minneapolis scored on a double in the first inning. Ellsworth responded with a single by Dayton Davis in the first inning. It was the only hit allowed by Lions pitcher Spencer Davidson, who got the shutout. Davidson pitched four innings, striking out four players..
Kordel Kriley took the loss for Ellsworth. Kriley gave up 11 runs on eight hits over two innings.
Davis went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead Ellsworth in hits.
Minneapolis 22, Ellsworth 3
The Ellsworth Bearcats watched the second game of the day slip away early and could never recover in a 22-3 loss to Minneapolis.
Ellsworth struggled to put runs on the board, and had a tough time defensively, giving up 22 runs. Minneapolis scored quickly in the first inning, when an error scored one run for the Lions. The Bearcats had three runs in the fourth inning courtesy of a single by Jace Turnipseed, an error on a ball put in play by Morgan Kelley and a double by Clayton Vague.
Bransen Schulte took the loss for Ellsworth, giving up nine runs on 11 hits over five innings.
Schulte had four strikeouts. Kordel Kriley, Gavin Tully, Turnipseed and Vague all had one hit to lead Ellsworth.
