Ellsworth participates in classic at Russell
The Ellsworth Bearcats rolled a double seven this past week at the Amos Morris Classic basketball at Russell.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams ended the tournament in seventh place after a week of games that started Monday, Dec. 9, and ended with the championship game Saturday, Dec. 14.
The boys lost a heart-stopper to Plainville, 52-51, in the first round before falling to St. John’s Beloit-Tipton, 54-45. The Bearcat win came Saturday against Smith Center, 54-42, in a game for seventh place.
The Lady ‘Cats traveled a similar path at the classic. They lost to Plainville, 34-41, in the first round and to Ulysses, 23-34, before capturing seventh place with a win over Russell, 48-45.
Jaide Talbott and Natalie Rolfs were the only Lady Bearcats in double figures during the tournament, scoring their game-high totals in the Russell game. Talbott contributed 21 points to the Ellsworth effort; Rolfs had 10 points, including the team’s only threepointer during the game.
Also in the scoring lane for Ellsworth — Lakyn Tenbrink, 8; McKenzie Stroede, 5; and Maggie Windholz, 4.
Ellsworth vs. Ulysses
Tenbrink led the Lady ‘Cats with 6 points, followed by Talbott, 5; Savannah Hellebust, 4; Rolfs and Pruitt, both with 3 from single 3-pointers; and Windholz and Stroede, each with 1.
Ellsworth vs. Plainville
Talbott was again in double figures — this time with 13 — as the Lady ‘Cats fell to Plainville, 34-41.
Tenbrink contributed 9 points, followed by Brenna Pruitt, 6; Windholz, 4; and Nicole Haase, 2. Pruitt’s points came from two 3-pointers.
Ellsworth was at Minneapolis Tuesday and at home Friday against Beloit.
