Ellsworth’s Katelyn Soukup took first place in the girls high jump, Kylan Turnipseed took first in the javelin with a throw of 110’ 11”, and Byron Johnson took first in the boys 1600 meter run April 12 during the Invitational Track Meet in Ellsworth.

Soukup had a high jump of 4’ 10’’. Ellsworth’s Madison Newell came in second with a high jump of 4’10”, with a jump by Emma Salyers taking sixth at 4’6”.

Johnson earned first with a time of 4:51.15.

“For the teams second meet of the season, we had strong 30 mph winds and extremely hot conditions,” said Ellsworth Coach Nick Rodriguez. “It is really tough conditions to compete in as our athletes went from one extreme to the other in just a few days.”

The Ellsworth girls team placed fourth in the competition, with the boys placing eighth overall.

“The vast majority of our track runners are young and inexperienced, but as we get more meets in we should get more experience,” Rodriguez said. “Overall, the team needs to continue to work hard in practice and get some valuable competition experience with our upcoming meets.”
