Ellsworth tennis team ties for 1st at Sterling
STERLING — Ellsworth tied with Sterling to win the Sterling varsity tennis meet April 9 in Sterling.
Both teams scored 24 points, followed by Pratt with 12 points and Hillsboro in fourth place.
Ellsworth placed first in No. 1 Singles and No. 1 Doubles competition. In No. 1 Singles competition, Joey Oberle won three straight matches to take first place. In No. 1 Doubles, Ellsworth’s team of Caden Whetzel and Dalton Zelenka took first places, edging out Sterling.
In other play, Ellsworth’s No. 2 Singles player, Cody Bourbon, took second place, while the Bearcats’ No. 2 Doubles team of Adam Vehring and David Wesseler took third.
The good luck continued for the Bearcats as the Ellsworth High School boys’ tennis team was at home Friday, hosting the annual roundrobin tennis tournament.
Ellsworth edged out Abilene by three points to win the tournament with 33 points. Sterling finished in third with 27 points, followed by Hoisington in fourth and Fairfield in fifth.
In singles competition, Ellsworth’s Joey Oberle won 8-0 over Fairfield’s Harris Siller, Hoisington’s Payton Steiner and Sterling’s William Weiner. In the final two rounds, Oberle edged out Abilene’s Wyatt Davis 8-1 and Sterling 8-7 (4).
In No. 1 Doubles, the Ellsworth team of Caden Whetzel and Dalton Zelenka defeated Fairfield 8-0 and Hoisington 8-3. However, Ellsworth lost its match with Abilene 8-1, but came back to beat Sterling 8-0 to take second place.
In No. 2 singles, Ellsworth’s Cody Bourbon defeated Hoisington 8-0 and Fairfield 8-2, but lost 8-0 to Sterling. Bourbon bounced back in the next round, defeating Abilene 8-1.
Ellsworth’s No. 2 Doubles team of Adam Vehring and David Wesseler took second after defeating Hoisington and Fairfield 8-0 in the first two rounds. In the fourth round, Vehring and Wesseler defeated Sterling 8-6, but lost to Abilene in the final round 8-4.
