Haase, Metro advance to state tennis

Ellsworth Junior-Senior High School Bearcat Nicole Haase and Central Plains Junior-Senior High Schoo Oiler Kyla Metro are both heading to state after Haase finished first and Metro fourth in singles play at the Class 3-2-1A Regional Tennis Tournament Oct. 8-9 in WaKeeney.

As a team, Ellsworth finished second overall, with Central Plains seventh.

Going into the regionals Haase was the top seed in singles, with Metro sec ond. Ellsworth’s Calli Sheridan was seeded eighth.

In doubles, the Bearcat team of Bekah Vague and Elena Jundt were the No. 14 seed, while their teammates Sami Couch and Emma Salyers were the 15th seed. Oilers Ashlynn Armstrong and Ryan Metro were seeded 20th.

In semi-final play at regionals, Haase defeated Gracie Riner of Osborne to reach the finals. Then, she defeated Caroline Brungardt of Trego-Wakeeney.

Bearcat Calli Sheridan, tied Cylie LaTourell of Sterling for seventh at regionals, just one place out of being selected to compete at state.

Metro was defeated in the semi-finals by Brungardt. Metro was also defeated by Riner, who placed third at regionals.

Makenna Russom of Phillipsburg took fifth and Blair Wolters of Osborne took sixth in singles action.

In doubles action, neither Ellsworth nor Central Plains placed in the top six in order to compete at state.

The state tournament is Oct. 15 and 16 at a location to be announced.
