Hits outpace score for ‘Cats
Despite out-hitting their opponent, the Ellsworth Bearcats baseball team couldn’t score the points needed to defeat Thomas More Prep-Marian Friday in the first game of a doubleheader. TMP also emerged as the winner in the second game, defeating Ellsworth 7-1.

A single in the first inning helped TMP get things started as the hit generated two runs. TMP went on to score another five runs in the sixth inning. Ellsworth answered by scoring four runs in the seventh inning thanks to a single by Dayton Davis, a sacrifice fly by Gavin Tully and a double by Tristan Soukup. Davis took the loss for Ellsworth, pitching more than five innings. Davis allowed seven hits, eight runs and struck out seven. Bearcat Grant Gwinner led Ellsworth with two hits in four at bats.

After falling behind early, Ellsworth simply couldn’t close the gap and lost 7-1 to TMP in the second game. The Bearcats struggled to contain TMP, giving up seven runs. A single in the first inning not only helped score two runs for TMP, but also fired up the offense in subsequent innings. TMP had its biggest inning at the top of the second, scoring three runs. Pitcher Bransen Schulte took the loss for the Bearcats, giving up seven runs on 12 hits over nearly seven innings. Ellsworth logged six hits on the day, including multiple hits from Tully and Bransen Schulte.
