Lady Oilers bury opponents at Russell

The Central Plains Lady Oilers maintained their place at the top of 1A basketball this week following their championship performance at the Amos Morris Classic at Russell.

The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released its high school rankings for the week of Dec. 16 — again placing the Central Plains girls in the No. 1 spot.

The Lady Oilers cruised to the championship Saturday night at Russell against St. John’s Beloit/Tipton. The victory brought the Lady Oilers their 115th consecutive win, a state record.

Emily Ryan dominated the game with 28 of Central Plains’ 62 points. St. John’s ended the game with 11, after being down 26-0 following the first quarter and 48-4 at half-time.

Lady Oilers Addison Crites and Lexi Oeser each scored nine points.

Also contributing to the win were Rachel Lamatsch, 3; Kassidy Nixon, 7; Delaney Rugan, 2; Jennah Jeffrey, 2.

Central Plains also defeated Smith Center, 75-17; and Phillipsburg, 57-47, on its way to the championship game.

Central Plains Boys

The Oilers placed fourth in the Russell tournament after losing to Ulysses, 46-22.

During the week-long tournament, the boys defeated Smith Center, 32-23, Monday, Dec. 9, in their opening game.

They barely fell to Phillipsburg, 38-37, Friday, Dec. 13, in the semifinals.

Both Central Plains teams were at home Tuesday against St. John. Results were not available by press time.

The Oilers also were at home Friday against Haven.

Following the Lady Oilers in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll are, in order: Olpe, Hanover, Montezuma-South Gray, Rural Vista, Thunder Ridge, Waverly, Cunningham, Otis-Bison and Coldwater.
