Marquette Thunder on the Smoky
The road leading into Marquette was alive with motorcycle riders Saturday on their way into Marquette for the town’s annual Thunder on the Smoky. Activities were limited this year by COVID-19, but everyone still seemed to have a good time. Downtown was full of guests, including David Bowmaker of Wichita, above, and vendors. Parked motorcycles stretched on both sides of main street for several blocks. Above it all waved an American flag from a truck belonging to the local volunteer fire department. The motorcycle event usually takes place earlier in the year, but organizers postponed it because of the coronavirus. Thunder on the Smoky is a production of Marquette’s Kansas Motorcycle Museum.
“We didn’t know what to expect this year. The turnout was better than we expected but the strong wind did not help with the attendance. There is a possibility that we may move the event to September next year. It will certainly be discussed,” organizer Scott Johnson said.
