VICTORIA — After a tremendous 13-0 season last year, the Central Plains Oilers football team began 2019 Sept. 6, by losing a heartbreaker in the closing minutes at home in Claflin in the season opener against Ness City.

Friday night, Chris Steiner’s Oilers were handed another stunning defeat by their rival Victoria Knights — falling 14-50 in Victoria.

In the first quarter, the Oilers’ several drives towards pay dirt were held firmly in check by the Knights. Things didn’t get much better for Central Plains in the second half, with Oiler sophomore Cole Lamatsch returning a kickoff to make the score at halftime 30-8 in favor of Victoria.

Offensively for the Oilers, senior quarterback Jerred Bieberle threw for 110 yards against the Knights, including one touchdown. The Central Plains offense wasn’t much better on the ground either. The Oilers gained only 103 yards on the ground in the losing effort.

On the defensive side of the ball, Bieberle had 13 unassisted and 4 assisted tackles, including a forced fumble. Oiler junior William Laymon had 10 unassisted and 5 assisted tackles, while junior Jacob Oberle had 9 unassisted and 7 assisted tackles as well as a fumble recovery. Junior Tyler Holmes had 6 unassisted and 5 assisted tackles.

Central Plains High School football is now 0-2 for the year.
