Oilers pull off double Sub State wins

If you’re a fan of the Centr Plains Oilers basketball teams, it doesn’t get much better than this week.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams brought home championship plaques from the 1A Division II sub-state game played on their home court at Claflin.

The seven-time state champi on Central Plains girls return to state following an overwhelming 63-15 victory Saturday over Hope Rural Vista. Central Plains (22-1) holds a state record 51 consecutive postseason basketball games.

Oiler Brynna Hammeke scored 17 points. Other players in double figures were Madison McGuire with 13 points and Kassidy Nixon wiith 11.

7 points; Kyla Metro and Addy Ogle each had 2.

The Oilers return to Great Bend’s Barton Community College for the 1A Division 2 state tournament. The girls play at 6 p.m. today (Thursday) against Beloit St. John’s/Tipton, which is seeded No. 7 with a 17-6 record.

Central Plains is seeded No. 2 behind undefeated Rexford-Golden Plains.

Good night for the boys

The Central Plains boys capped an unlikely run to a 1A Division 2 state tournament berth with a 46-41 championship victory Saturday night over Lost Springs-Centre.

The Oilers, 4-18, won one regular season basketball game in the rugged Central Prairie League. The Oilers will play No. 1 seed Hanover at the state tournament at Great Bend’s Barton Community College.

“We played really good basketball again,” said Oiler coach Bryce Steiner told the Great Bend Tribune. “Our big key was the way we boxed out and controlled the rebounding.”

All-league standout Peyton Ryan scored 26 points and converted 10 free throws. Ryan scored 17 first-half points and nine after halftime. Hunter Klima added 12 points.

“Peyton has been really good down the stretch,” Steiner said. “The big difference was we made 12 of 16 free throws and they hit 1 of 6.”

Also adding to the scoring total were Hekele with 6 points and Freis with 2.

Wilson vs. Central Plains Girls

The Wilson High School girls basketball team ended its season with an 81-18 loss to top-seed Central Plains on Friday, March 4 in the Claflin-Central Plains Class 1A Division II Sub-State Semifinals.

Central Plains led 29-3 after the first quarter, 51-7 at halftime and 74-16 after three periods. The fourth frame was played with a running clock and the Lady Oilers cruised to the 81-18 win.

Sophomore Anna Thielen led Wilson with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Brynna Hammeke paced Central Plains with 22 points. Kassidy Nixon followed with 17 points. Marilyn Soeken scored 14 points and Madison McGuire and Reese McGuire each scored 12 points. Madison also had 12 boards.

Central Plains outrebounded the Lady Dragons 31 to 19 and 11 to 0 on the offensive glass.

Wilson also committed 26 turnovers compared to just six turnovers for Central Plains.

The Lady Dragons finish the season with a 6-14 overall record. They were 3-8 in the Northern Plains League.

Boys

The Wilson High School boys’ basketball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday, March 3, with a 68-45 loss to Central Plains in Claflin in the Class 1A Division II Sub State Tournament Semifinals.

The Oilers jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one period and led 32-19 at the half. Central Plains led 51-34 after three quarters and the last couple minutes of the fourth frame were played with a running clock. The Oilers pulled away and won 68-45.

Freshman Connor Charvat led Wilson with 22 points and four three-point baskets. Freshman Cade Brokes followed with 10 points.

Central Plains Sophomore Peyton Ryan led all scorers with 35 points and 12 rebounds. He was 18-of-20 from the free throw line. Freshman Aiden Hekele and sophomore Hunter Klima each followed with 10 points.

The Oilers outrebounded Wilson 32 to 24 and eight to four on the offensive glass.

The Dragons were just 3-of-6 from the foul line while Central Plains was 23-of-33.

Wilson also committed 23 turnovers compared to just nine for Central Plains.

The Dragons finish the season with an overall record of 4-17.
